Scarlett Vandermeer is swimming upstream. A Junior at Stanford and a student-athlete who specializes in platform diving, Scarlett prefers to keep her head down, concentrating on getting into med school and on recovering from the injury that almost ended her career. She has no time for relationships—at least, that’s what she tells herself.

Swim captain, world champion, all-around aquatics golden boy, Lukas Blomqvist thrives on discipline. It’s how he wins gold medals and breaks records: complete focus, with every stroke. On the surface, Lukas and Scarlett have nothing in common. Until a well-guarded secret slips out, and everything changes.

They start an arrangement. And as the pressure leading to the Olympics heats up, so does their relationship. It was supposed to be just a temporary, mutually satisfying fling. But when staying away from Lukas becomes impossible, Scarlett realizes that her heart might be treading into dangerous water…

Spicy, sports-related romance novels are my current kink, and the more I read, the harder I am to impress. Of course I’ve read Ali Hazelwood novels before, but I never expected to become so engrossed and entangled with this story that I found myself re-reading it over and over again, within a span of just a few months. When I found myself on the brink of a reading burnout, it was Scarlett and Lukas that brought me back from the edge. Was it my appreciation for our heroine’s unmatched drive to succeed in a male-dominated field or could it have been her resilience to overcome past trauma? Or quite possibly, the soft inclusion of the BDSM world that I know not much about? Regardless of what made me come back for more time and time again, Hazelwood should be praised for her character development, attention to detail and bringing forth insecurities that make her characters vulnerable, yet relatable.

“You’re not good at hiding anything, Scarlett. I could tell when you didn’t know I existed, and I could tell when you became aware of me.”

Deep End is a steamy college romance that dives into the complexities of relationships, trust, and personal growth. Scarlett Vandermeer, a platform diver at Stanford, and Lukas Blomqvist, a world champion swimmer, find themselves entangled in a secretive and intense connection that blurs the lines between competition and desire. While Scarlett has physically recovered from a gruesome injury that nearly ended her diving career, she is left with a crippling fear of failing and letting those around her down. The mental block she’s created in her head is the center focus of her life until she receives an offer from her swimming teammate’s ex, Lukas. All she needs to do? Submit to him in the bedroom. It’s a power Scarlett has craved but has never had the chance to explore, but once she is given the opportunity, she “dives” in, head first.

“He didn’t ask for permission. He just took it—like he always did. And somehow, that made me feel safer. More wanted than I’d ever felt.”

Their chemistry is undeniable, filled with tension, passion, and moments of vulnerability. As their relationship deepens, they explore a dynamic that gently touches on BDSM and dom/sub themes, adding an exciting layer for curious readers who are also looking for a sweet and consensual portrayal.

The story balances steamy encounters with heartfelt moments, and both Scarlett and Lukas navigate their own insecurities and past traumas, making their journey feel authentic and compelling. Once she is able to give her control to him, albeit briefly, it allows her to reconnect with her internal self, healing old wounds she never thought possible.

“You know it, don’t you?” he asks.
“What?”
“From the very start, you had all the power. From the very start, I was in the palm of your hand.”

If you’re into intense, emotionally charged romances with sizzling chemistry—and don’t mind a tasteful dip into power dynamics—Deep End is a fantastic read that’s both bold and tender.
