For a shot at love, he’ll do whatever it takes…
Carter Beckett is the NHL’s best player―both on and off the ice. His career is at its peak, his friends are performing better than ever, and there’s no shortage of women to spend the night with. What more could he want?
Olivia Parker isn’t new to professional hockey players, thanks to her best friend’s boyfriend, but she has no interest in dating one herself―no matter how hot he is. And anyway, she loves working as a teacher and hanging out with her best friend, drama-free. Why would she want to spend her time stroking the ego of an arrogant athlete?
But once Carter meets Olivia, he can’t think of anything else. Too bad for him, Olivia is hellbent on keeping him at arm’s length, with no intention of giving into his charms. Perhaps it’s time for Carter to up his game…after all, nobody said he had to play fair.
Sparks will fly as Carter does whatever it takes for Olivia to consider him.
This book will have you engaged and laughing from beginning to end. Becka Mack’s writing is sharp and witty, with plenty of humor and lighthearted moments woven throughout Carter and Olivia’s love story. She is able to balance playful, steamy moments, with more emotional and poignant beats, keeping the tone fun without being too light. As the characters navigate their emotional growth, Mack skillfully builds tension, making the eventual payoff all the more satisfying.
Carter, a professional hockey player, and Olivia, a successful, strong-willed working woman, exist in two different worlds. Carter is cocky and carries a reputation as the charming playboy both on and off the ice. Olivia is more on the serious side, focused, and has zero interest in being involved with him, no matter how hard he tries. And believe me, he tries. He tries again. And then some more. Carter takes nothing too seriously and makes the smallest events into grand displays of affection while Olivia insists the spotlight stay as far away from her as possible. While she isn’t easy to win over, Carter, who’s never had to work before to win the affection of a woman, finds himself going all-in to prove to her he’s more than a headline.
“I know I flip your world upside down. You fucking demolish mine. Please, let me in. Let me see you. Let me have you. All of you.”
Their chemistry crackles from their first interaction. What starts as flirtation quickly turns into a full-on pursuit. For once in his life, Carter wants more than just a fling. He wants Olivia, exclusively, and he’s willing to change for her.
Over the course of the novel, you’ll see Carter slowly earn Olivia’s trust, shifting from cocky and reckless to vulnerable and real. There’s tension, banter, and lots of spice, but there is also depth. You’ll see this especially as Olivia’s emotional wounds are revealed and Carter, surprisingly, rises to her need and supports her wholly. Carter also opens up about his past too, including complex family issues that explain his former lifestyle.
“She’s like…waking up on Christmas morning when you’re three years old and you finally understand what it’s all about. She’s the moment the rain stops and the sun comes out, lighting up the sky with color, and everything smells new and fresh. She’s the first skate on a frozen lake, surrounded by snowy mountains and pine trees and the freshest breath of air. She’s rolling over in the middle of the night, pulling that warm body into yours and curling around it, and everything’s just right.”
Their love and respect for each other is tested in the end, and a truly swoony redemption is warranted as Carter’s previous playboy lifestyle catches up with him, threatening everything he and Olivia have worked for in their relationship. In this light, Olivia is grounded, smart, and a perfect balance to the chaos that is the love of her life, her Oreo-obsessed boyfriend, Carter.
Ultimately, Consider Me by Becka Mack is a delightful, character-driven romance that doesn’t rely on tired tropes to pull readers in.
