Sweet Oblivion by Bella Matthews

I never wanted to get married.
Until the night my life went up in flames, and Ryker Beneventi walked into the fire to save me.

The Philadelphia Kings’ scorching hot defensive end has a tendency of doing that . . .
Protecting me is instinct. Marrying me is strategy.
Calling me “his wife” . . . That’s for fun.

One carefully crafted press release later, and I’m standing beside the most photographed man in football, wearing a diamond I didn’t choose, and bearing a last name revered in this town.

It’s supposed to be temporary. A clean solution to a messy problem. But nothing about our marriage is as it seems.

Because somewhere between the locked doors and late nights, the lines between love and legacy blur. Until the only thing left more terrifying than the night that forced us together . . .
Is how scared I am to walk away.

If there’s one thing Sweet Oblivion proved to me, it’s that sometimes the most unexpected beginnings create the most meaningful kind of love story.

Did I read this in one sitting? Yep.
Did it completely take over my brain and my emotions? Also yes.

Ryker Beneventi has been that man since the earlier books, but this story? This is where he fully owns his spot as top-tier book boyfriend. He’s protective in a way that feels instinctive, not controlling. Thoughtful. Patient. The kind of man who pays attention, to her comfort, her boundaries, her healing, and never once makes her feel like she has to rush or be anything other than exactly where she is. He’s this soft, steady presence wrapped in a tattooed, intimidating exterior, and if you come for someone he loves? Good luck.

“You’re my obsession, wife.”

And Delaney… she hit deep.

She’s survived more than anyone should have to, and the way Bella writes her internal struggle, the push and pull between wanting happiness and being terrified of it, felt so real. Watching her slowly learn to trust, to lean on someone, to believe she’s worthy of love and safety… that journey was everything. She’s not weak. She’s not fragile. She’s strong in a way that’s quiet and hard-earned, and seeing her step into that strength without losing her softness was honestly beautiful.

I’m proud of the woman I am today because I walked through fire to get to her. A few little sparks aren’t going to stop me now.—Delaney’s Secret Thoughts

What makes their relationship work so well is how grounded it feels. This isn’t just a marriage of convenience thrown together for drama. It’s built on respect from the very beginning. Ryker gives her control in every sense—emotionally, physically, mentally—and that trust becomes the foundation for everything that follows. Even when things get intense, even when he’s struggling with his own emotions, he always centers her.

“I’ve never been anyone’s before, Ryker. I’ve never let myself trust anyone enough to be theirs. Until now.”

And the connection between them? Effortless.
The banter is sharp, natural, and sometimes laugh-out-loud funny (especially when Delaney is trying, and failing, her way through ASL). But layered underneath that is this steady, growing intimacy that feels earned. The attraction is there right away, but it’s the emotional closeness that makes everything hit harder.

“You are going to destroy me, Delaney. But what a sweet oblivion it will be.”

I also loved how the ASL representation was handled. Ryker being hard of hearing isn’t treated as something to fix—it’s just part of who he is. And the way they adapt, communicate, and even build intimacy around that? It added such a unique and meaningful layer to their relationship.

And then there’s the healing.

This book doesn’t shy away from heavy topics, and it shouldn’t. Delaney’s trauma is handled with care, and more importantly, with respect. Her healing isn’t rushed, isn’t magically fixed by love, but it is supported by it. Ryker doesn’t save her in a way that takes away her agency… he stands beside her while she saves herself, and that distinction matters.

“Ryker… please don’t break my heart.”
“I’ll protect it with my life, Delaney.”

The found family? Incredible.
The love, the support, the sense of belonging, it all wraps around this story and makes it feel even fuller.

At its core, this is a story about survival, trust, and choosing love even when it feels terrifying. It’s about learning that you’re allowed to be happy, even after everything.

And somehow, between all the weight and emotion, Bella still delivers the heat, the humor, and those moments that make you melt (don’t even get me started on the “my wife” energy… I was gone).

Ryker and Delaney didn’t just win me over—they stayed with me.

This one hurt a little, healed a lot, and completely stole my heart.
