I swerved off a mountain road into a ditch to avoid a moose.

And then a rugged cowboy in a beast of a truck comes to my rescue.

Brooks Keel. The quiet loner at Elk Ridge. The cowboy-biker who looks devastatingly good on a horse and a motorcycle. Ex-con.

As a jobless twenty-three-year-old virgin, I have no business getting involved with a bad boy. But between his hard-won smiles and protective streak, my heart—and my body—hunger for him.

We’re in a chrysalis of paradise and Huckleberry Hill is starting to feel like home…

But then the truth about Brooks’ MC past is revealed, and my world explodes. And now I don’t recognize the man I fell in love with. I don’t recognize my baby’s father.

There’s something to be said for a slow burn…but there’s also something incredibly satisfying about a love that strikes fast and hard, like the lighting of a match. And that’s exactly what Emma Slate delivers with Brooks and Poet in Prospector’s Peak. Their connection is immediate, intense, and all-consuming, and honestly, I loved every second of it.

“All our steps are leaps.”

Brooks is an ex-con with a complicated past, but from the moment he pulls Poet out of a ditch after she swerves to avoid a “moose”, there’s no hesitation in him. He’s steady, protective, and completely locked in on her from the start. There’s no games, no wavering, just a man who knows what he wants and doesn’t waste time pretending otherwise. And despite everything in his past, Poet never feels safer than when she’s with him. That quiet, grounded devotion from Brooks made him incredibly easy to fall for.

“Can’t help but smile around you, Freckles.”

Poet, meanwhile, is stepping into a new chapter of her life. She moves to Huckleberry Hill hoping to rediscover who she is away from the noise of the city and the safety net she’s always relied on. She’s young, a little unsure, and still finding her footing, but there’s also a quiet courage in her choices. Leaving everything behind, chasing something new, and allowing herself to fall for Brooks so quickly takes more strength than she even realizes. Watching her come into her own throughout the story was one of my favorite parts.

“I feel more like a moth than a butterfly.”

Their relationship moves fast, but it never feels shallow. Instead, it feels like two people recognizing something real and choosing not to fight it. And while they fall quickly, Emma Slate doesn’t ignore the obstacles. Brooks’ past, including his ties to the Tarnished Angels and the time he served, creates real tension and forces them into honest, necessary conversations. Brooks’ instinct is always to protect Poet, but he also understands that their relationship can’t survive without openness. That emotional growth adds depth to their whirlwind romance.

“I was waiting for you.” My smile quivered. “Waiting for you to make me feel safe and secure. And so out of my mind with desire that I didn’t stop you from sliding into me without a condom.”
“I didn’t slide into you. You took it upon yourself, remember?”

One of my favorite things about Slate’s writing is that once her characters are in, they’re all in. There’s no endless push and pull, no dragging out the inevitable. Instead, we get to watch the relationship actually grow—to see the emotional intimacy build, to experience the good moments alongside the hard ones. For me, that makes the love story feel richer and more satisfying.

And Brooks? He’s the kind of hero I can’t get enough of. Quiet, loyal, patient, and deeply protective—the type of man who would burn the world for the woman he loves but still treats her with gentleness and care. He supports Poet while also giving her the space to grow into the person she’s meant to be, and that balance made their dynamic incredibly compelling.

“I made you mine, Freckles.” He pressed his forehead to mine. “And I don’t think you’re prepared for what that really means.”

I also appreciated that Poet isn’t constantly pushing away Brooks’ care. She allows herself to be loved, to be protected, and to accept what he offers, not because she’s weak, but because she trusts him. There’s something really refreshing about that dynamic, and it adds warmth to their relationship.

Prospector’s Peak is emotional, fast-paced, and deeply heartfelt. It’s a story about new beginnings, second chances, and choosing love even when it feels risky. Emma Slate once again delivers a romance that’s both tender and intense, with characters that feel real and a connection that’s impossible not to root for.

This might be my favorite in the series yet, and now I’m absolutely counting down the days until Wyn’s story.
